If left untreated, appendicitis can lead to an abscess or sepsis. The functions of the appendix are essentially unknown, some experts believe it stores good bacteria to help recover from a digestive tract upset whereas others consider it a remnant from our evolutionary past. Therefore, removal surgery doesn’t negatively affect the body in any known way.
